The chilly days are in full swing and what feels better than to wrap up in your cozy electric blanket, turn on the heater and lie down with a mug of coffee and a good book. But did you know that winter also witnesses a spike in cases involving house fire with a rise in appliances and equipment including electric heaters, electric blankets and kitchen appliances that are either faulty or left unattended while still running.
As your trusted local Geelong electrician, we believe it’s our responsibility to advice you on electrical safety tips as the colder days set it.
Below we have listed some of the precautions you should be taking to make sure your home is electrically safe for you and your family this winter:
Electric heaters
Electric heaters should be properly cleaned to remove any dust built up over the summers. Check the power cord for obvious damage or rust on the reflectors. Always place heaters in open spaces to allow ventilation and avoid overheating, burns or fires. Keep adequate distance from other electrical equipment as well as items that can catch fire such as clothes, curtains, carpets etc.
Electric Blankets
Just as much comforting electric blankets are in the chilly days, extra care is needed when it comes to their use. Any damage to the wiring can be potentially dangerous as it can cause a shock or even fire. Don’t fall asleep with the electric blanket on. Turn it off when the bed is warm. Never leave it unattended.
Smoke Alarms
With winters being high time for fire hazards, it’s advisable to test your smoke alarms on a monthly basis for proper functioning. Testing is as simple as a push of a button to see if it beeps. Also change the battery at least once a year, ideally before the winter starts.
Electrical Appliances
Check your cloth dryers, hair dryers, microwave ovens and any kitchen appliances you use for slow cooking during the winter. Look for frayed wiring, overhearing, or any other obviously damaged components that might have skipped your mind when putting them away during summer time.
Fire Extinguishers
In case of an electrical fire, NEVER try to put it out with water. Water and electricity do not mix and can cause an electric shock. Always use a fire extinguisher. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, use a fire blanket. Always buy products that meet Australian standards.
